Tales from Old Ireland
by Malachy Doyle, Niamh Sharkey and Maura O’Connell includes a
collection of Malachy Doyle’s seven favorite Irish folk tales. Each
one is exceptional. The first and the last include references to St.
Patrick that make them especially good reads for St. Patrick’s Day, but
each and every tale is engaging. I particularly enjoyed the second
story—Fair, Brown, and Trembling—which is an Irish retelling of the
Cinderella story. Synopses of the book indicate that it is appropriate
for 12 year olds, but this version, which includes the CD, is
appropriate for 6 to 10 year olds as well, who can read along with the
CD. This book doesn’t include information about St. Patrick or St.
Patrick’s Day, but it is a wonderfully Irish book. If you are going to
have one book of Irish tales in your children’s library, this is the
one I would pick. Ages 6+.
