Staff Reviews

This is a story about a boy whose head is full of wonder.

Throughout the morning, his daydreams transform the world around him. Unfortunately, lots of other people—the bus driver, the crossing guard, and his teachers—all tell him to get his head out of the clouds. It is only in art class that he realizes he can bring the wonder out of his head for the whole world to enjoy.

Children could easily spend hours belly-down on a rug pondering each of the five double-page spreads, all spectacularly whimsical, humorous, wild, bold, and unbridled...Few books so truthfully represent a child's wandering, unwavering wondering.
—Kirkus Reviews

A stirring visual celebration of a child’s creative potential.
—Publishers Weekly

Hanson’s arresting illustrations bring this dreamer’s tale to life, capturing the sharp contrast between the mundane world and the dazzling images the boy conjures up....close inspection will spark young readers’ own imaginations.
—Booklist

Hanson renders the everyday world in browns, tans and beiges, the better to play up the energy and sparkle of the boy’s imaginings, which brim with color. Her marvelous mixed-media spreads make this a book that lives up to its title.
